OTR Team up with Rio Tinto


The official opening in Australia

OTR have made a significant move into Australia by launching a partnership with one of the world's largest organisations, Rio Tinto plc, that will reduce the environmental impact of large-scale mining on the continent.

Based in Perth, Western Australia, the new plant will retread the largest earthmover tyres used in Rio Tinto's opencast operations and is geared up to produce more than 1000 tyres per year.

Enhanced retread technology has been developed by OTR to ensure that the tyres will operate successfully in the extreme temperatures. The new plant will contribute to Rio Tinto's sustainable development policy, as well as having an important positive effect on the environmental impact of the mining operation.

Sustainable development is a guiding principle of Rio Tinto's business, working to the UN definition: "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

OTR have been responsible for designing and equipping the factory and will manage and operate the site for Rio Tinto. The factory will be staffed by up to 30 OTR employees.

Key personnel from Australia have spent time in the UK at OTR and a number of skilled OTR UK engineers will remain in Perth for the foreseeable future.
